# WordPress multisite split up, migrated and securely modernised

Leseland Steiermark and Lesezentrum Steiermark were moved from a shared multisite network into two independent websites. At the same time, security problems were fixed and older technical structures modernised.

### Organisations

Leseland & Lesezentrum Steiermark

### Project

Multisite split & migration

### Focus

Security · repair · modernisation

### Operation

ongoing maintenance & improvements

## Starting point

The two websites were organised within a shared WordPress multisite system. At the same time, there were security problems, a need for repairs and technical legacy issues in older themes.

The aim was to separate Leseland Steiermark and Lesezentrum Steiermark technically, migrate them into independent websites and gradually make the existing systems more secure and maintainable.

## Requirements & challenges

- Detach two connected websites from a WordPress multisite
- Migrate content and features into independent installations
- Investigate and fix existing security problems
- Keep older themes while modernising them step by step
- Continue supporting both websites after the split

## Implementation

1. Analyse the multisite The network, websites, themes and existing technical dependencies were recorded.
2. Handle security problems Known vulnerabilities and technical errors were addressed as part of the stabilisation.
3. Split the websites Leseland and Lesezentrum were moved from the multisite network into separate installations.
4. Modernise the themes The existing themes were repaired and gradually adapted to current requirements.
5. Continue operation Both websites are maintained, secured and technically improved on an ongoing basis.

## Technical decision

### Why one case study for both websites makes sense

Leseland and Lesezentrum are two independent public sites, but technically their separation was one shared migration project. Two almost identical subpages would explain the actual starting point less well and create needlessly similar content.

The split reduces the operational dependency between the websites. Since then, changes, maintenance and further development can be handled in a more controlled way per installation.

## Outcome

### Two independent websites

Leseland and Lesezentrum were separated from the shared multisite network.

### Security problems handled

Technical vulnerabilities and repair needs were addressed as part of the migration.

### Modernisation during operation

The older themes and installations are continuously improved and maintained.

## Sensible next steps

Related services work together, but each one can be commissioned on its own.

### WordPress security

Handle vulnerabilities, legacy issues and security problems systematically.

### WordPress help

Take over, repair and migrate complex existing installations.

### WordPress maintenance

Keep separated systems running in a controlled way after the migration.

## Is your WordPress structure too tangled technically?

I analyse dependencies, security risks and migration paths and develop a controlled plan for separation, repair or modernisation.
